Cheltenham Gold Cup Festival comes around every March and creates a great atmosphere in our town. For the past three years’ the Gloucestershire Echo and Cheltenham Racecourse have teamed up to do a Window Competition for all the retailers in the town. Those who know me, know I love to dress my window and when there is a £3,000 prize at stake, I love to put my creative hat on and try my best to design an eye-catching display.
This years’ display was based on the popular ‘Kentucky Derby’ that I played on Brighten Pier a couple of years ago. My talented Dad built the ‘racecourse’ frame out of MDF and I painted it bright colours to stand out with each of the toy horses coordinating with their own colour and their colour appropriate name.
Like the original ‘Kentucky Derby’ the Little Jellycats toys are trying to move the horses closer to the finishing post by throwing ping pong balls in to the corresponding cups.
We used Bashful Jellycat toys (like we do for many of our windows; they’re great props!) as VIP spectators watching and cheering their favourite horses on, in the stands. One cheeky giraffe has even had a little too much fizz!
We added big bright paper flowers to make the window colourful and fun as well as the tote board with the horse’s names and odds on.
Unfortunately, we didn’t win the competition but we had great fun doing it and received so many compliments from customers and our colourful display did make an appearance in Gloucestershire Echo on Saturday 11th March.
Until next time,
